High-arc
designs allow a lot more action under the spigot
April showers aren't limited to spring skies. Inside, homeowners
increasingly turn to high-arc kitchen faucets for a double dose
of practicality and style. "It's more convenient to do things
in your kitchen when you have more room under your spigot and in
your sink," said Tom Branstetter, department manager of plumbing
for the Glendale-area Lowe's. Chores such as rinsing bulky dishes
and filling pots and pitchers become much easier with one of these
models on hand.
Some types -- such as Brizo's elegant Floriano design -- up the
ease-of-use factor by adding a pull-down spigot, eliminating the
need for a separate side spray. Matching a high-arch faucet to your
kitchen's decor won't pose a design challenge as manufacturers churn
out a creative mix of styles. Indiana-based Delta Faucet Co.'s sleek
stainless-steel one-handle version would be at home in any contemporary
setting, and Brizo touts the Floriano's "organic inspiration"
for its ability to blend into both traditional and modern kitchens.
Buying tips for high-archers
From Tom Branstetter, department manager of plumbing for the Glendale-area
Lowe's:
Check your space. High-arch styles work in most kitchens, but note
the clearance. "If you have a shelf that comes out over your
sink, and maybe has a light on it, that might restrict you."
Add up the options. To avoid sticker shock, remember that faucet
prices vary with construction, finish and design. Solid brass generally
will cost more than die-cast zinc (medium-grade) or plastic, but
it will most likely last longer.
Understand upkeep. Some types of faucets are easier to repair than
others. Ask about basic maintenance requirements and replacement-part
availability.
